Norfolk Deploys Drones as First Responders

Drones are being deployed in Norfolk to potentially become first responders to certain incidents. This trial, part of a project by the Home Office and the National Police Chiefs' Council, involves four police forces. Norwich was selected as a test site due to its history with pilot-operated drones since 2017, its flat topography, and its coordinated air traffic control with Norwich Airport.

Enhancing Emergency Response

The goal of these trials is to determine if drones can be safely and effectively operated remotely from a control center, rather than requiring pilots to maintain a line of sight. The first trial drone is based at the University of East Anglia, and plans are in place for up to five drone sites to cover the entire city. Supt Phill Gray and Sgt Danny Leach highlight the potential for drones to save lives by providing rapid response to areas where people might be vulnerable, stuck, or lost. This capability could save significant resources and enhance overall emergency response.

Future of Police Operations

Supt Taryn Evans, overseeing the project for the National Police Chiefs' Council, clarifies that the intention is not to replace police officers but to augment their capabilities. Drones can offer critical insights that might not be evident from emergency calls, helping officers respond more effectively. However, the project will require another two to three years of trials to ensure safety and develop a reliable operating model. Supt Gray hopes that within this period, drones can be safely deployed nationwide, becoming a standard part of police operations.
